Join Excel Auto Tech on Promoting Heart Health in Houston

December 06, 2021

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both American men and women. Because of this, Excel Auto Tech has pledged to help raise awareness and become a Heart Walk Hero for the 2021 Houston Heart Walk on Saturday, November 13.

So far, Excel Auto Tech has raised a little over $1,100 dollars for this cause, but we’re not done yet. We need more help from you to reach our fundraising goal of $5,000. Please learn more about the event and learn how you can make a donation on our fundraising page here.

Heart Disease in the United States

  • One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.
  • About 659,000 people die from heart disease every year. This represents every 1 in 4 deaths.
  • One person has a heart attack in the United States every 40 seconds.
  • 1 in every 5 heart attacks is silent, meaning the damage is done but the person is not aware they have suffered a heart attack.
  • About 18.2 million adults aged 20 and over have Coronary Artery Disease.

Some Solutions to Living a Healthier Lifestyle

If you are looking to change your lifestyle for the better, here are some easy solutions to practice every day.

  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep a day. When you are rested and refreshed, you are in a better mindset to be productive for the day.
  • Substitute water for all other drinks. Soft drinks, specialty coffee, and juices are full of sugar and empty calories, where water keeps your body hydrated.
  • Eat the rainbow. Try to eat fruits and vegetables of all colors with every meal.
  • Move your body. Take small steps to be more active every single day.

Join Excel Auto Tech on Our Mission to Help Houston Be Heart Healthy

June 23, 2021

Did you know that one person dies every 36 seconds in the United States due to Heart Disease? Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women nationwide, and because of this, I have pledged to help.

Excel Auto Tech has recently pledged to become a Heart Walk Hero for the 2021 Houston Heart Walk on Saturday, November 13. For us, joining the Heart Walk is about making a difference in someone’s life while raising awareness for the American Heart Association.

Raising awareness with the Heart Walk is more than just talking about heart disease and its effects. It is about living a healthy lifestyle and setting up your community for success.

Back even before the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 in 5 Houston residents lived below the poverty line. The pandemic worsened our community’s finances, where many Houstonians found themselves unable to source or afford healthy food for their families. To help out, the American Heart Association’s Executives with Heart Campaign worked with the Houston community and distributed almost 38,000 pounds of food to community members in need.

While we’re closer to controlling the pandemic and getting back to our daily lives, our work is not yet over. The American Heart Association is dedicated to making a healthier world for all of us, one step at a time. This year, we have expanded our impact into Acres Homes to invest in sustainable change by improving every Houstonian’s access to healthy food while improving hypertension control.

At Excel Auto Tech, we would be nothing without our customers. We want to make sure that the Houston community is as healthy as possible, and we want to have a stake in your success. For this reason, we have set up a $5,000 fundraising goal and would love your help in reaching it.

With heart,
Jay at Excel Auto Tech

SNP Presents Two Female Winners Inaugural Auto Mechanic Scholarship

November 1, 2020

It is no secret that the auto mechanics industry is a male-dominated field. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, females represent only 2.1% of all auto mechanics and are just 9.7% of all employees in the auto mechanic industry nationwide.

So, to encourage female mechanics and to empower women entering the automotive industry, Standard Motor Products has developed a Women in Auto Care Scholarship contest along with the Auto Care Association and Women in Auto Care community.

Established in 1919, Standard Motor Products is one of the leading independent manufacturers and distributors of replacement parts for motor vehicles across the country. Their scholarship is one of the first of its kind.

Two female students, Savannah Miller of Prince Frederick, Md., and Eoin Dockter, of Jacksonville, Ark., have won the inaugural scholarship and were each presented with $5,000 to go towards their auto tech schooling.

The scholarship was available to female students of all ages, with the simple requirement of completing an online questionnaire and submitting a photo of themselves. Miller and Dockter were chosen over hundreds of submissions based on their creativity and relevance to the auto tech industry.

The beauty of this scholarship is that it is allowing winners from all walks of life to get an education in the automotive field, especially in a time where a lot of things are up in the air and uncertain. Dockter is a mother of four that had to quit school due to the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine in order to take care of her family. Now, this scholarship will allow her to pursue her dream of becoming a diesel technician.

Miller is a high school student who sees a career as an auto mechanic as one that helps build the foundation of America. For Miller, her scholarship is a  “dream come true.”

Test Drive Tips and Tricks to Know Before Buying a Vehicle

October 1, 2020

So, you’ve picked out your dream car and are ready to sign on the dotted line. The only thing left for you to do is to take the car for a spin. A thorough test drive is arguably the most important step of the car buying process, so here are some quick tips to help you get the most out of your test drive.

Walk All the Way Around the Car
Chances are, you may just be looking at one side of the vehicle during your preliminary inspection. So take some time to slowly walk around the car and look for any cracks, dents, dings, or rust that can signal the car may not be in the best shape.

Test the Shock Absorbers
Before you get in the car, check the suspension by pressing down hard on each corner of the car. There should be little to no bounce, and if the car shakes, there is a potential for a larger problem.

Start the Car and Let It Idle
You’ll want to let the car idle so you can see if the engine is strong and there are no unusual sounds and smells. During this time, check the dashboard for any warning lights and to see if the temperature gauge is where it is supposed to be, at around the midpoint level.

Don’t Just Drive Around the Block
A test drive shows you how your car will drive in every situation, so you need to pretend you are going about your daily activities when you’re in the car. Don’t just drive around the block, instead, drive for a bit on the nearest expressway and see how the car accelerates. Drive into a parking lot, and test how the car backs up, how it fits in a parking space, and experiment with how the gears work.

With these tips in mind, you have the tools to uncover any and all potential problems with your vehicle before you agree to purchase. Remember, take your time on your test drive, and don’t rush the process!

4 Key Tips for Hitting the Road With Your Pet

September 1, 2020

We get it, your pet is your best friend. So it only makes sense that you’d want to bring them along on any trips or drives around town. However, driving with your pet in the car can be dangerous for both you and them if some precautions aren’t taken. Here are some easy tips on how to ensure a safe ride when your four-legged friend is in the front seat.

Take it Slow
Your pet might not be used to driving in a vehicle, so it is totally normal for them to act scared and skittish when they go for their first ride. To get them acclimated to the vehicle’s sights, sounds, and smells, take them on small trips and slowly build up the length of time spent in the car. This way, they won’t be prone to howling, jumping, or distracting you when you’re driving long distances.

Feed on a Schedule
It’s a good idea to feed your animal a few hours before they get in the car so they don’t get carsick on the road. After they finish their meal, only provide small quantities of water so they don’t have an accident.

Invest in a Harness or Leash
Since we have to wear seatbelts while driving, it only makes sense that your pet does as well! A proper car harness or leash will secure your pet to the seat in case you have to stop suddenly or take a sharp turn.

Keep the Windows Up
While it may be cute, letting your pet stick their head out the window on a drive can be dangerous. They may be hit by flying objects or may become distracted and even jump out of the moving vehicle.

Traveling with your pet doesn’t have to be stressful with these tips in mind. So go have fun hitting the open road with your favorite furry friend!

Warning Signs Your Car Needs Repair Immediately

August 1, 2020

There are many gadgets and gizmos in your car, so it can be frustrating to know what they all mean. However, understanding the ins and outs of your vehicle can help you save some serious time and cash when it comes to preventative maintenance.

Here are some warning signs that your car needs to be seen by a trusted mechanic, immediately.

Excessive Smoke from the Exhaust Pipe
It is normal for white smoke to leave your exhaust pipe once in a while, but if you are noticing an abnormal amount of black smoke, this can be a sign you have an oil consumption issues Other warning signs are a burning smell and black residue around the back bumper.

Leaks Under the Car
Your car should not leak fluid, at all except condensation from the a/c. Before you get in your car in the morning, back out of your spot and check for any wet spots. If you notice something amiss, bring your car to a mechanic as soon as possible.

Noises When Driving
A vehicle should run smoothly and without much noise. If you notice squealing or squeaking, this could be a sign your brakes and/or brake pads need to be checked and replaced. Additionally, if you hear a dragging or a droning noise from under the car, this could signal problems with your tires and/or wheel bearings.

Decreased Fuel Efficiency
As a rule of thumb, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency should stay consistent. A sudden change in your miles per gallon can be due to a whole array of issues such as low tire pressure, old air filters, defunct spark plugs, or bad fuel injectors. In any case, if you notice a change in your typical mileage and gas use, head to the mechanic.

If you notice any of these signs, call us down at Excel Automotive Technology for an appointment. We will take a look to fix any outstanding problems and ensure you are as safe as possible when out on the road.

How Frigi- Fresh Is Your Vehicle?

April 21, 2020

Now that Spring is in full swing, it is time to start thinking of how to spruce up your vehicle for the warmer season. And while you might think that all you’ll need to do is to turn on your air conditioning unit to get a breeze flowing, it is important to go one step further. There can be a lot of nasty germs and smells lurking inside your vehicle’s A/C unit, which is where the BG Frigi-Fresh can come in.

BG Frigi-Fresh is a hospital-grade aerosol disinfectant/deodorant and air refresher. When your A/C unit is running, it removes moisture from the air, which then can combine with minuscule particles of airborne debris and settle in your vehicle’s system evaporator. This leads to the growth of mold spores and fungi, causing your A/C unit to push smelly air into the vehicle. For some, breathing in this dirty air can potentially cause allergic reactions, sinus infections, or other respiratory problems.

A simple application of BG Frigi-Fresh will kill off all of these allergens before they get a chance to reach your sinuses. All it takes is 30 minutes, and BG Frigi-Fresh will clean 99.9% of all germs, viruses, mold, mildew, and fungi living in your vehicle’s ventilator system. It’s even US EPA registered as a viricide, which is an agent that is proven and known to deactivate and/or destroy viruses.

Additionally, this product is so powerful that it will completely sanitize the interior of the vehicle. You’ll be left with a car that smells fresh and clean -- and you’ll realize that you’ve missed that “new car smell!”

BG Frigi-Fresh can be easily added to the BG Climate Control Service to ensure your vehicle smells and runs great. We recommend this service when you replace your cabin filter or at most every 15,000 miles to keep your car fresh. If you have any questions about BG Frigi-Fresh or how we can help your A/C system get in top shape before the summer sets in, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

How to Get Your Vehicle's AC Ready for Summer

March 20, 2020

When was the last time you checked your car's air conditioning unit? Probably at the start of last summer when the first hot day told you that rolling down your windows won't be enough.

This is a trap many people fall into. It's easy to forget to check the status and health of your air conditioner on a regular basis. But with summer fast approaching once again, now is the perfect time to put on your gloves and begin working on your air conditioning maintenance. Here are some of the best ways to get your car's AC ready for those warmer days.

Check your filters

The most important aspect of improving your car's air conditioner's longevity is changing out the air filters. It is because clean filters are essential in maintaining your air conditioner's efficiency. If you have clogged, dirty filters, the airflow becomes blocked and your machine will have to work harder to get the job done. This can put unnecessary strain on your car, but it can be even worse for you.

Your air filter should be changed every 15,000 miles, as a rule of thumb. Otherwise, you might be breathing in all the debris that's clogging it up in the first place: including dirt, allergens, molds, and fungi.

Contact the professionals

Changing your air filter is simple enough, but monitoring the health of your car and identifying signs of wear and tear is another ballgame.

At Excel Auto Tech, we have the experience and expertise needed to ensure the health of your vehicle's air conditioning unit. We will check the refrigerant levels on the unit, maintain any parts that seem to be wearing down, and disinfect all your air vents to prevent passengers from getting sick. Keep in mind that the best time to do this is early spring (AKA right now). That way, you won't be stuck sweltering inside your vehicle when summer finally arrives. Doing it even earlier can also help you beat the crowd.

When you're ready to schedule an AC maintenance check with a company you can trust, rely on us. Check out our March Special: every AC check receives $10 off! Use the code SpringSpecial when you visit our site to get these deals today.

Excel Auto Tech Participating in the Texas MS150

March 5, 2020

For the past five years, Jay at Excel Auto Tech has participated in an event close to his heart: biking in the Texas MS150.

The MS150 is more than just a ride. It is a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that affects roughly 400,000 Americans and 2 and a half million people worldwide.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affect’s the body’s central nervous system, or in other words, their spinal cord and brain. This potential debilitating disease happens when the body’s immune system attacks the protective sheath of myelin that covers the nerve fibers in the spinal cord, interrupting the pathways of communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

No two instances of MS are the same as the signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis are quite varied. Some individuals may be able to live with long periods of remission without experiencing any symptoms, where others may suffer permanent damage and can lose the ability to walk independently.

This is why Jay chooses to ride the MS150. This experience is more than just a bike ride, it is a trek around Texas to raise money in hopes of finding a cure for this debilitating disease. Dollar for dollar, and mile for mile, the MS150 can be the way we all find a cure -- the bike route varies between 155 and 170 miles, so imagine how much of an impact fundraising can have!

After having a small medical scare earlier this year, Jay has just been given medical clearance from his doctor to participate in the MS150. With a goal of fundraising over $2,000, it is Jay’s goal to find a cure for this disease forever.

Helping others is Jay’s commitment, and we hope you can join us on this ride. Learn more about the MS150 and donate to the cause

3 Things Any Driver Should Do After Being in a Car Accident

December 15, 2019

It is no secret that being in a car accident is one of the most traumatic things that can happen to any driver. Unfortunately, car accidents are all too normal with over six million car accidents happening annually in the United States.

While we understand that the time after an accident is one where your emotions run high and you may not be thinking straight, it is important to follow a set of steps after your accident to ensure your safety and protection.

The first moments after a car accident are the most crucial. Once you gain your bearings, any driver should:

  • Pull away from oncoming traffic, and keep your flashers on to alert other drivers there has been an accident.
  • Check for injuries and speak to the other driver to ensure everyone is okay.
  • Call the police and when they arrive, ask for a detailed police report.
  • Take pictures to document any damage to the car and/or to your person.
  • Exchange information with anyone involved in the accident. This includes the other drivers and passengers, any witnesses, and the police officer.
  • Notify your insurance company and report the incident as soon as possible.

In Texas, all drivers have the right to choose their own automotive body shop to tend to their vehicle after an accident. You will want to ensure your vehicle is in good hands and that it will be fixed in a timely and cost-efficient manner, so don’t feel pressured to go to a mechanic or body shop that you are unfamiliar with! Our professionals at Excel Automotive Technology are here to help you in any way we can, so contact us today.

What to Look for When Choosing a Body Shop

December 15, 2019

If you have just been in an accident and are looking for a trusted body shop in the Houston area, you may feel overwhelmed and confused about exactly what to look for. Your car is important to you, making it even more important to invest its care into a body shop you can trust! Here are some things to look for when it comes to finding a qualified auto body shop.

Ask for their certifications Any reputable shop should be certified by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (the ASE). In order to become certified, mechanics have to go through rounds of skills and knowledge testing, as well as having at least two years of experience working on vehicles of all kinds.

Ask to be shown the problem Vehicles are complex machines, and it can be confusing to know if there is an actual problem with a car without seeing the proof firsthand. In order to ensure you are not being swindled by a mechanic for an unnecessary repair, ask to be shown the problem before you agree to any and all maintenance. This way you can see for yourself what the issue is, and know how it will be fixed.

Ask the right questions Never feel apprehensive to ask questions when consulting with your mechanic! They are there to help you after all! Plus, it is always good to walk into the shop prepared with some questions surrounding the prices associated with the repair, expected turnaround time, the warranty on parts if they are added, and the expected longevity on the repair.

As always, our pros down at Excel Auto Tech are here to help you with any and all of your automotive repair needs. Call the shop today to get a quote, or stop by for more information on how we can help you!

Daylight Saving Time: Lights Out or Lights On?

November 14, 2019

Daylight savings time is the unofficial start to winter; with it, we can expect shorter days, blacker evenings, and cold nights. And what’s the one thing we all need more of during daylight saving? Light.

As vehicle owners, it is more important than ever to pay attention to our vehicle’s lights come daylight savings time. Since we are always sitting behind the wheel, we may not notice that there may be a problem with our car lights, making it incredibly dangerous for us and other drivers on the road. It is a good practice to thoroughly check your vehicle’s lighting every time daylight savings rolls around, so here’s what to look for.

  • Clean dirt and debris off of all headlights, tail lights, signal lights, and running lights. Don’t forget to pop off the headlight covers as a way to deep clean everything, so you eliminate the risk of the lights becoming foggy without you knowing it.
  • Turn on your light’s high beams and low beams to ensure functionality. While you’re at it, try out your brake lights and backup lights with someone else standing outside your vehicle.
  • Raise the interior lighting settings so you can properly see your dashboard at all times. Now it is becoming darker earlier, you may not realize how dim your interior lighting is until you are straining to read the signals.
  • Make sure your headlights are aimed properly. When your headlights are unaligned, you can blind other drivers when passing them, causing dangerous conditions on the road.

In addition to these checks, make sure to follow proper vehicle lighting safety measures when driving! This means to never drive with internal lights on, always turn on your headlights when your windshield wipers are on, thoroughly wiping off your headlights after it has snowed, and when in doubt, use your bright lights if you can’t see properly.

Have any questions regarding your vehicle’s lighting system? Bring your vehicle to Excel Auto Tech and we can make sure your lights are working properly. Call or go online to schedule an appointment.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter: a Guide

November 14, 2019

Now that the cold weather is upon us, it is time to prepare our vehicles for wintertime. There’s a lot that needs to be done when it comes to ensuring our vehicles can safely drive on icy and slippery roads. Here’s a quick checklist that will help winterproof your car in a snap.

  • Fill up your engine coolant and antifreeze. These liquids prevent your engine from freezing due to very low temperatures in the winter, but they can’t work properly if they are running low! Without coolant, your engine can freeze, causing plenty of expensive problems down the line.
  • Check your tire tread depth. Thicker tire treads are what give your tires traction and grip on snowy roads. You can easily make sure your tire tread is adequate by doing the penny test. Place a penny into the tread, and if Lincoln’s head is showing, your tread is a bit too low for safe winter driving.
  • Invest in winter windshield wiper fluid. Not all windshield wiper fluid is created equally, as the fluid you use in the spring and summer can freeze in colder temperatures.
  • Test your battery. Having one of our Excel Auto Tech mechanics test your battery can be a great preventative winter proofing step because your battery’s capacity decreases in colder weather. Having a mechanic do a one over ensures the battery is at peak performance and nothing goes wrong.
  • Get your car waxed. All that salt and ice on the roads can wreak havoc to your car, so getting it waxed before the first snowfall can help to prevent any excess scrapes, nicks, and rust from building up.

Preparing your car for colder temperatures is vital to the longevity of your vehicle. If you have any questions about winter proofing your car, come on down to Excel Auto Tech today. We’d love to help!

Fuel Air Induction Service: an Intro Guide

October 27, 2019

Your vehicle’s engine is a complex system that requires many parts for it to function properly. One of these is the air induction system, which creates a path for air to enter the engine’s combustion chamber, where the majority of the engine’s energy is created. But over time, it is common for these pathways to become coated with a buildup of carbon and varnish, which jeopardizes proper airflow in the engine. A perfectly functioning engine needs just the right amount of fuel and air pumped through it at all times, and this excess build-up can cause serious harm if left untreated.

Do I need a fuel air induction service?
Without proper engine airflow, you may notice the following happen when you’re driving:

  • Lower fuel efficiency than normal - the carbon and varnish coating will soak up your fuel, making it burn faster
  • A rough, bumpy, and jostling ride
  • Slower pick up speed when you place your foot on the gas pedal
  • Violent shaking or vibrating when driving
  • A rough idle
  • Random pinging and/or knocking noises
  • Problems starting the car

What does a fuel induction system do?
A fuel induction process is a simple system that will clean out your engine’s air induction chamber, including the piston valves and the fuel injector nozzles. This simple service should be done on a regular basis, not only to get rid of the coating of grime but to ensure the build-up doesn’t get too thick that it prevents the engine from running altogether. As soon as your vehicle is done, you’ll immediately notice that its acceleration is better, an increase in horsepower and fuel efficiency, and a slow ride!

A fuel air induction service is necessary for any vehicle to run smoothly. If you are interested in learning more about this service, call Excel Auto Tech today.

Your Car’s Transmission Maintenance - What to Know

September 25, 2019

One of the hardest working systems in your car is the transmission, which is the gearbox that allows your car to shift into different gears like park, neutral, and driving. The job of the transmission is to apply the right amount of power to your car’s wheels at any given speed and does this by shifting gears similar to that of a bicycle. This function is made possible with help from transmission fluid, which lubricates the gears to allow them to work properly.

When the transmission fluid is old and dirty, it causes problems with gear shifting and can make your car quite unsafe to drive. Luckily, our pros here at Excel Auto Tech offer transmission maintenance service to ensure your car is working properly and you stay safe. Here’s what to know about maintaining your transmission.

  • Both manual and automatic transmissions need proper fluid maintenance.
  • Your car’s make and model determines when you should change the transmission fluid. This can be anywhere from every 30,000 miles to every 100,000 miles. Speaking with our trusted mechanics will help you to determine which maintenance interval is best for you.
  • A tell-tale sign of a transmission fluid leak is a puddle of red liquid on the ground, underneath the middle of your vehicle.
  • Transmission fluid should be red, clear, and smell sweet. If it is brown, murky, or smells rotten, you are in need of a flush.

Changing the transmission fluid and filters can be dangerous if done by yourself. Accessing this part of your vehicle requires the car to be lifted up, so it should only be done by a licensed mechanic. Come on down to Excel Auto Tech and we’ll get your vehicle’s transmission back to normal in no time at all.

Breathe Easily With MIST In-Car Quality Air Service

September 25, 2019

Have you ever thought about the air you breathe inside your car? Unfortunately, the air inside your car from your vents can be riddled with mold and other allergens that can wreak havoc on your sinuses and immune system. And with the typical American spending about an hour per day in their car, you’ll want to do everything you can to ensure the air you’re surrounded with is as clean as can be.

This is where MIST In-Car Quality Air Service can come in. This professional treatment for mold, mildew, and bacteria ensures your car’s ventilation system is as clean as possible. Considering that a car’s air conditioner creates an ideal environment for mold to develop -- think cool, damp, and dark -- MIST works hard to clean, disinfect, and remove mold for good.

How does it work?
The MIST Service uses very small droplets (about a tenth of the size of aerosol droplets) in a customized solution meant to stop mold and live micro-organisms from reproducing. These droplets will travel throughout the air channels in your vehicle, entering the ventilation system, killing mold, and preventing new spores from forming. Compared to manually cleaning, the MIST system works by thoroughly reaching the inner depths of your ventilation system, removing mold spores in places you aren’t able to reach.

What is cleaned?
The entire ventilation system of your vehicle is cleaned and sanitized during the MIST treatment, including the evaporator, air ducts, passenger compartment services, and heater core.
For the best possible results, the MIST In-Car Quality Air Service should be performed every 6 months. This service only takes about 15 minutes to complete, so call Excel Auto Tech today to schedule your appointment. With MIST, you’ll be breathing easy in no time.

Debunking Common Cooling System Maintenance Myths

September 15, 2019

Unlike popular thought, a car’s cooling system isn’t related to your car’s air conditioning functions. Rather, the cooling system is what keeps the engine’s temperature regulated and ensures the engine doesn’t overheat.

But when it comes to learning about your car, there is, unfortunately, a lot of miscommunication available, making it confusing to differentiate automotive fact from fiction. Here our experts at Excel Auto Tech debunk some common myths about maintaining your car’s cooling system to keep you in the know.

Myth: The Cooling System is maintenance-free.
This is a common misconception simply because many car owners don’t know what exactly a car’s cooling system does. But since a cooling system needs ample amounts of coolant to work, it requires some extra maintenance to ensure the coolant is properly flushed so it doesn’t break down and cause corrosive damage to the car.

Myth: All anti-freeze products are created equally
Some car owners believe that anti-freeze is the liquid used to keep your windshield crystal clear. This is not true, as this is wiper fluid is  extremely different than the anti-freeze needed to cool down your engine.

Myth: A small coolant drip is not anything to be worried about.
It’s common for most car owners to brush off a small coolant drip, but in reality it is quite a bit deal. Not only is coolant extremely toxic, a leak shows that either a hose or the radiator is in need of instant repair. Remember, a small hole can easily grow and grow and split open, causing expensive damage to your car and a headache for you.

If you notice something is wrong with your car’s cooling system, or simply want some annual maintenance, call Excel Auto Tech today. Our trained professionals are here to help bring your car back to tip top shape in no time at all.

Understanding the Ins and Outs of Your Car’s Climate Control System

September 15, 2019

When we get in our car, most of us simply turn on the heat or air conditioning and call it a day. But have you ever wondered what those other dashboard controls are for? Here our Excel Auto Tech pros explain what any car owners should know about using their car’s climate control system.

Temperature
This one is simple: how hot or cold would you like your car to be? You’ll have a blue or red dial in your car, and the thicker the color, the cooler or hotter it will be. When you set the temperature to be in the middle of both of the colors, it will be lukewarm.

Flow
The level the air will come out of your car. The flow will directly affect the defrost, internal, and floor vents. Think of this as where you would like to feel the air, not how fast it is coming at you.

Fan
Different from the flow of the air, the fan is there to determine how much you want to feel the air conditioning or the heat. The higher the number, the stronger the air current.

Recirculate
Your car’s climate control works by bringing outside air inside the vehicle and either heating or cooling it. You have the option to recirculate the air in your car so less of it is exhausted out of your cabin, which uses less energy. This option is helpful when you want to cool down the car fast, when you are low on gas, and when you pass by something smelly and you don’t want the smell to enter your car. As a pro tip, know that most “MAX A/C” options automatically recirculate the air, so you don’t have to choose the option manually.

Have any questions about your car’s climate control system? Come on down to Excel Auto Tech — we’ll be happy to give it a look!

Is It Time for a New Car Battery? Watch Out for These Warning Signs

August 19, 2019

It’s a driver’s worst nightmare -- the day they get in their car and it doesn’t start. Unfortunately, most car owners don’t think much about their battery until it is too late. Here are some warning signs that signal you need to bring your battery down to Excel Auto Tech right away for a tune-up.

  • A slow engine crank. When you go to start your vehicle, does it take a while to catch? A sluggish crank is a telltale sign that the battery’s amperage is slowly failing.
  • A clicking sound when turning the key. A clicking sound happens when the battery is so far gone that it doesn’t have enough power to the starter.
  • Corrosion around the battery. The battery can leak and cause a build-up of corrosion that can cause the battery to stop working altogether.
  • Old age. Typical batteries only last between three to four years. However, a battery’s lifespan can fluctuate based on your driving habits and its exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Low battery fluid level. Most batteries have a translucent area where you can check the fluid level, and if the fluid is lower than the battery’s lead plates, its time to get it checked.
  • Problems with electricity in the car. If you are noticing problems with the car’s power windows, and/the radio, then chances are your battery needs to be inspected.

If you are noticing any of these warning signs, then come on down to Excel Auto Tech today to get your battery checked. We can’t have you being stranded, so we’ll take good care of all your automotive needs. Call us at 832.975.8117 to set up an appointment today.

Preparing Your Kid’s Car For Back to School: An Auto Checklist

August 19, 2019

  • Oil level and condition. Any car needs quality oil to keep all the moving parts of the engine lubricated and working properly. As a rule of thumb, change the engine’s oil every 3,000 or 5,000 miles depending on your vehicle’s make and model.
  • Exterior lights and wipers. Make sure the exterior lights aren’t foggy and the wipers are in good condition to work properly so your child has full visibility while driving.
  • Tires. Take time to get a good look at the tread of your tires, if they show any signs of excessive wear or tear, and if they are underinflated. To accurately test this, you can use the penny test. All you need to do is take a penny and place it with Lincoln’s head down into the tread. If you can see his head through the tread, then it is time to change the tires as the tread is too worn down.
  • Brakes. It’s always a good idea to do a bi-annual check on the condition of the brakes, brake pads, and rotors to make sure everything is working smoothly. Brake pads should be changed every 25-30 thousand miles.
  • The battery. The car’s battery will need a test once in a while to make sure it can adequately run the car’s electrical system. Because batteries may not show any signs they are failing, a simple check before back to school can prevent any break downs and emergencies from happening.
  • A spare tire. Put a spare tire and a jack inside the car right now -- just so your child is prepared in case of a pesky flat.
    Add a section

Your child isn’t completely ready for school until their car has passed this auto-check. Avoid any unwanted trouble by scheduling a courtesy check appointment with Excel Auto Tech today, and get those vehicles ready for school!

What to Look For When Shopping Around for a Mechanic.

July 09, 2019

We get it - your car is your baby. You want to make sure that whenever it isn’t working properly you can find a trusted auto mechanic to bring your car back to life again. However, there are some less than trustworthy mechanics out there, so you’ll want to keep in mind some specific things when asking for quotes and service estimates.

To ensure your car will be in the right hands, here’s what to look for when shopping around for a mechanic.

Shop around before you drop

You never want to be in a pinch and only look for a mechanic once your car has broken down. It is always a good idea to have a good mechanic on hand to call on if you are in a hurry to fix a problem. Think of it this way; you may think with clouded judgment in the rush to get your car fixed within a reasonable amount of time. Bypass this and do your research before something bad happens to your car so you can trust you’ve made the right decision.

Don’t pick off of price alone

The old saying is true -- you truly get what you pay for. Just because a mechanic charges a cheaper price doesn’t mean it will be a quality fix. You want to invest in a mechanic that will repair your car and truly fix the problem at its core instead of a simple patch job. A cheap fix can lead to plenty of expensive issues down the road, so you’ll want to pay for quality the first time around!

Check online

In today’s digital world, everything is done online. Most people choose to communicate over the Internet and this includes reviewing their favorite businesses online. A good practice is to take a quick look at what people are saying about the mechanic online and you’ll soon get a good grasp on the quality of their service.

Ask questions

This may seem obvious, but don’t be shy when it comes to asking your mechanic questions! Not only are they here to help you, but they are working for you and want to make you feel comfortable with the entire process from start to finish. Make sure to ask about the mechanic’s credentials, years being in business, their customer service history (you can even ask for recommendations from previous clients), their warranty policies, and if their employees are certified in specific things, such as the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

With these factors in mind, you’ll be on your way to finding the perfect mechanic for your car in no time. If you have any questions when it comes to any automotive service needs, do not hesitate to contact Excel Automotive Technology today, we are here to help you! Schedule an appointment with Jay today.

More Power And Less Fuel With Gasoline Direct Injection

by Ivonne Tostado

April 27, 2018

Looking for more power out of your vehicle, while not burning through your wallet paying for gas. Gasoline Direct Injection, or GDI, is the perfect balance of power and efficiency for your vehicle. Let's dive right in...

Why should you consider direct injection?

GDI uses 35% less fuel, produces 20% fewer emissions, and generates 10% more power than conventional port fuel injection engines. GDI systems typically have 2 modes: ultra lean, or stoichiometric. Stratified charge mode, or ultra lean burn as it's more commonly referred to, is activated during cruising and light road-running conditions, stoichiometric mode is activated during moderate and heavy load conditions.

All this sounds too good to be true?

GDI has so many positives, but you are probably thinking "Ok, but what's the catch?" The catch is simple, GDI can sometimes collect dirt and air in the intake valves, therefore buildup and residue can occur on the intake walls. Virtually all GDI systems have improved their carbon buildup technologies since early adoption so this negative is turning into a positive.

Weighing the positive and negative.

By now you probably know that gasoline direct injection (GDI) increases fuel efficiency, causes less impact on the environment, and pushes out more power than traditional fuel injection systems. You know that it also causes carbon buildup which can lead to corrosion and breakdown inside your intake valves. Those first three things sound really great right? But that pesky last negative may make people second guess GDI. Well have no fear because Excel Automotive Technology is here.

At Excel our technicians are trained in all the latest automotive technology. Like GDI with fuel, we directly inject our expertise and top-notch customer service into our business. If you are considering GDI, want to know more about direct injection, or you want to focus on other areas of improvement for your vehicle, Excel Automotive Technology is the place for you. We put honesty and quality above everything, and treat all our customers like family.

Are Car Repairs Tax Deductible?

Tax Deductions for Auto Repair

According to RepairPal, if you use your car for business - even just part of the time - the government may pick up some of the tab for your auto repair during the tax season.

What counts as a business vehicle?

If you use your own car, pickup truck, or SUV to travel between two business destinations, it can be considered a business vehicle. Business destinations can be your office or other regular business location, the places where your clients are located, paces where you pick up inventory, or temporary work sites. If you're not sure if your uses qualify, check with a tax professional.

Commuting from your home to work does not count, nor does use of work equipment vehicles like moving trucks or dump trucks.

15% OFF Power Steering Fluid Flush

by Ivonne Tostado

January 20, 2017

You may ask what is a power steering flush? Well, this pump pressurizes the power steering fluid which is then carried by a line to a power steering gear box, or a rack and pinion. The steering gear, or rack and pinion, uses this high pressure fluid to help with the motion created by you turning the steering wheel, making it much easier to turn the wheels.

The general rule of thumb that states the power steering fluid should be replaced every two years or after running the vehicle for 24,000 miles. A licensed mechanic will recommend that the power steering fluid be changed if it looks light brown when he or she is doing a vehicle inspection.

The Problems Surrounding a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Engine

by Ivonne Tostado

October 12, 2016

GDI Fuel Economy

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) improves fuel economy and aids drivability through the rev range. Gasoline is injected at a high pressure into the engine’s combustion chamber. GDI results in a more complete combustion and cooler cylinder temperatures that enable a higher compression ratio which leads to greater efficiency and power. The GDI engines are mostly found in luxury and mainstream vehicles, however, these engines are having reliability problems.

According to Bosch direct injection can return a 15% gain in fuel economy and boost low-end torque by as much as 50%. The issue with the GDI engines lies in the intake ports and across intake valves as deposits build up and effect fuel performance. The GDI, also known as Petrol Direct Injection must be maintained regularly to prevent the deposits from building up and avoid expensive repairs.

The lean high pressure fuel mixture deposits build rapidly and bake onto intake valves and ports over time. Since the fuel does not travel to the intake ports or across intake valves the deposits build up. If your engine stumbles more than it used to, or suddenly the engine lacks power you should have it checked out by your auto repair shot.

According to AutoGuide.com the rumblings noise of your engine could be blackened buildup on the backsides of intake valves which is a major problem and something that could be disastrous for motorists if they do not maintain the engines performance. The carbon buildup can result in all kinds of problems for the auto owner from drivability woes to misfires, turbocharger issues, and even catalytic converter damage.

If your engine is a GDI, make sure to have your mechanic take a look to assist in preventing major engine problems which could be much more expensive than a regular maintenance program. Check out our Fall GDI special as our offer expires. November 21st. Schedule your GDI engine inspection today.

Cabin Air Filter Replacement

by Ivonne Tostado

July 22, 2016

Cabin Air Filter Replacement

"Many motorists are unaware their vehicle has a cabin air filter, much less where the filter is or how to replace it. Yet cabin air filters have been included in many vehicles since the mid-1980s, and are used in more than 90 percent of newer cars and trucks."

"One of the reasons for this lack of knowledge is that cabin air filters are hidden behind the glove box or under the base of the windshield. They are out of sight — and usually hard to find unless you know exactly where to look. Some hybrid vehicles even have a separate cabin air filter for the hybrid battery cooling system in the back of the passenger compartment."

"The filter’s location, replacement procedure and recommended service interval can usually be found in most vehicle owner’s manuals. But many motorists never open the pages of their owner’s manuals so they remain unaware of these filters."

When Should You Replace Your Cabin Air Filter on Your Car?

by Ivonne Tostado

July 15, 2016

Ever wonder when you should replace your cabin air filter? A cabin air filter is a common feature on most modern cars. It cleans the air that enters your vehicle through the HVAC system. Before the air is cooled or heated, it passes through the cabin filter to remove irritants like dust, pollen, and other allergens.

The cabin filter keeps your car smelling nice and free of particles that you don’t want inside your vehicle.

Recommended replacement schedules vary by vehicle, and the environment and climate also affect how often the cabin filter needs changing. People who spend a lot of time driving through city traffic and heavy urban smog will need to switch out their filter more often. One way to know your cabin filter needs to be changed is a persistent, unpleasant odor in your vehicle. Generally speaking, you’ll want to change your cabin filter every 12,000 – 15,000 miles.

The method of changing your cabin filter is different for each car, and you’ll usually find the details in your owner’s manual. Often, the filter is behind the glove box, which you can take out by releasing it from its fasteners. On other vehicles, the cabin filter is easier to reach, and will be under the hood.

A dirty filter will be filled with contaminants like dust, grime and even insects and leaves. A fresh filter will do a better job of cleaning the air coming into your car, making for a more pleasant interior experience. There are different types of filters available, with a wide price range. Some filters come with activated carbon which not only traps dust but odors and emission as well.

If you’re in doubt about changing your cabin filter, ask your mechanic. A knowledgeable technician will tell you how your environment affects your cabin filter’s life span, and what you can expect from your vehicle. Ask to see the filter before it’s changed to see if it’s really necessary. Change your filter regularly to keep the air inside your car as comfortable as possible
